01 — Overview

Overview

Bizimply Connect is a communication and engagement suite built for shift-based industries such as hospitality and retail.

As Product Lead and Designer, I owned product strategy, UX design, and delivery. The objective was to enable frontline teams to communicate reliably, stay informed, and feel connected to their workplace.

I designed the solution from the ground up, integrating Smart Groups, messaging, and a company feed directly into the workforce management platform — creating a high-impact upsell product that contributed to ARPU growth and customer retention.

02 — The Problem

The Problem

Fragmented Communication

Managers relied on WhatsApp, texts, emails, and verbal updates. Messages were missed, and there was no visibility into who received critical information.

Low Engagement → Higher Turnover

Frontline staff often felt disconnected from the wider business. Multi-location teams lacked consistent communication and cultural alignment.

Compliance & Operational Risk

There was no reliable way to ensure staff received important policies or operational updates. Existing methods lacked auditability and exposed businesses to risk.

03 — Strategy

Strategic Goal

Transform Bizimply from a back-office admin tool into the central communication hub for shift-based teams.

Bizimply Connect was positioned as a premium, upsell-ready product aligned with Bizimply's strategy to increase ARPU while enabling future employee engagement capabilities.

05 — The Solution

Three moves, in response to three problems.

Move communication into the system of record.

Rather than compete with WhatsApp on chat features, the workforce platform that already held shifts, roles, and locations became the place messages flowed through. Distribution and traceability came for free, because the system already knew who needed what.

Delivered throughMessaging (1:1 & group)Smart Groups

Give the frontline a seat at the company.

Disengagement on shift-based teams isn't a notification problem — it's a visibility problem. The News Feed gave staff a mobile-first surface for announcements, leadership voice, and recognition: the things office-based teams get for free through email and intranets. Smart Groups kept the signal relevant by default rather than a feed to be muted.

Delivered throughNews FeedSmart Groups (role, location, schedule)

Make every critical message provably delivered.

For policies and operational updates, "I sent it" wasn't enough. Each post carried acknowledgement state per recipient, so managers — and auditors — could see who had read what, and when. Compliance stopped being a faith-based exercise.

07 — Decisions

Key Design Decisions

Native, not bolt-on

Connect was embedded within existing workflows to encourage adoption and reduce friction.

Visibility over noise

News Feed prioritised clarity and scannability to ensure operational updates were seen.

Automation over manual setup

Smart Groups eliminated admin overhead and ensured accurate communication targeting.

Mobile-first delivery

Frontline staff rely on mobile devices; performance and usability were critical.

08 — Outcome

Outcome

Bizimply Connect launched to beta on October 19, 2023 after 18 weeks of development and quickly became central to daily operations.

An in-app upgrade flow — embedded directly inside the existing admin product — let customers discover, trial, and activate Connect without a sales call, collapsing the path from interest to revenue.

09 — Reflection

Reflection

Adoption depends on behaviour change

Onboarding, nudges, and visibility patterns were critical in shifting teams away from external messaging tools.

Performance is UX

Real-time communication must feel instant. Early latency challenges reinforced the importance of performance as a user experience factor.

Platforms win through integration

Embedding communication directly into operational workflows created more value than a standalone messaging tool.
